The original house is in a traditional U shape colonial style home, with colonnaded connecting walkways, that surrounds a central courtyard. The house is approximately 300 square metres, and contains 5 bedrooms, each with a fireplace and ensuite bathroom. One wing of the house contains an open plan living room with fireplace, a generous dining room, and a well-planned kitchen. The kitchen has an attached storage and laundry room. There is a south facing terrace, with a built-in barbecue area directly off the dining room and kitchen. This terrace leads directly out into a large walled garden (approximately 450 square metres) that contains the 2 apartments and caretakers casita.
The original early 19th century adobe casa was purchased in 2008, and completely modernized and refurbished to a very high standard, using skilled local artisans and craftsmen. The house showcases elegant wrought ironwork, fine woodwork, handwoven textiles, copper sinks, blown glass lighting fixtures, hand painted tiles and artisan work found in the local villages around Lake Patzcuaro. The house and gardens have been meticulously maintained by the current owner.
The location is prime; 2 short blocks from the Plaza Grande (Plaza Don Vasco de Quiroga), in the heart of historic Patzcuaro. The square is spacious and one of the most beautiful in all Mexico. The square contains some fine restaurants, artisanal shops, and is full of magnificent protected colonial buildings.
Patzcuaro is located 50 minutes south of Morelia, on the Morelia - Zihuatanejo freeway. It is also approximately halfway between Mexico City and Guadalajara. Morelia is the capital city of Michoacan and has an international airport. The airport is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes from the house. Mexico City is a 4 1/2-hour drive by freeway, or a 50-minute flight from the Morelia airport. Guadalajara is less than a 4-hour drive away. Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are less than a 2 1/2-hour drive away. Patzcuaro is centrally located, with easy access to the many colonial cities of central Mexico.
